Heron Nests

Great Blue Herons have taken up residence at Metzger Farm in Westminster.  They are nesting in the trees above the lake there.   The chicks have mostly hatched but some birds were still building nests when I was there.  I got to see a mother feeding her chicks and a few birds gathering sticks.  Unfortunately, the city has decided to restrict access almost completely from the nests.  They have erected a fence blocking access along the shore.  This makes photography quite challenging.  I am all for protecting wildlife but this seems extreme.  A fenced perimeter 30 feet from the nests seems logical, not 200 feet.  Herons and other birds have nested quite peacefully at City Park and Prospect Park in the past without any interference from humans.  Oh, well.  Bring a long lens or some binoculars and enjoy the show.

Set Stills for a Remarkable Life

Recently, I had the opportunity to shoot set stills for the movie A Remarkable Life.  It was filmed on location here in Denver.  I learned a lot about movies from this experience.  I found it very interesting how scenes are shot from so many different camera angles.  It could take hours to shoot a single, short scene.  I finally found a use for the silent motor drive on my Canon 5D MKIII as I had to make as little noise as possible.   I got to shoot inside the Museum of Nature and Science, a pawn shop, a church, and other interesting locales.  Check out more pictures from the movie at

Downtown Denver Arts Festival

Thanks to everyone who stopped by my booth at the Downtown Denver Arts Festival this past weekend.  The weather was good for the show and it was fun to meet new people.  The crowds were light on Saturday but it picked up on Sunday.  Pics of my booth are posted below.

Fashion Photography

Recently I had the opportunity to attend the Look Fabulous fashion photography tour presented by Lou Freeman and Lindsey Adler.  It was a fun workshop and I learned a lot about lighting.  I got a chance to experiment with some cool poses and different lighting techniques.  My favorite was a three-way reflector that provides some beautiful soft light on models’ faces.  I can’t wait to adopt some of these techniques in my wedding and senior portrait work.
