  • Bosque del Apache

    Bosque del Apache NWF

I spent a quick trip in New Mexico over winter break.  Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge is a great place to visit in the winter since so many birds spend the cold months there.  I also explored some nearby refuges including the Bernardo refuge and Valle de Oro near Albuquerque.  All of these were good places for wildlife photography.  Bosque features sand hill cranes and thousands of waterfowl, including snow geese and several species of ducks.  I witnessed a beautiful mass take off of snow geese the morning I arrived.  I also saw several thousand pintail ducks.  I even spotted a javelina but it darted into the bushes as soon as I stopped.  I only had a 300 mm 2.8 lens with me on the trip so I focused mainly on photographing clumps of birds rather than individual birds.  Next time I’ll bring a 600mm lens with me.

    Bernardo Wildlife Area

The Bernardo wildlife area contains feeding grounds for sandhill cranes.  It is located just north of Bosque.  Take the exit for Highway 60 and head east.  Take the first left and then head north on the frontage road.  Shortly, the road brings you to the access to the Bernardo.  There were several hundred cranes clumped together in the fields.  There are a couple of elevate viewing decks to explore while you are there.

    Valle de Oro NWF

Lastly, I stopped at a brand new wildlife refuge, Valle de Oro.  It is located about 5 miles south of the airport in Albuquerque.  The refuge is small.  It has a couple of roads through feeding fields and you can also walk a short trail along the Rio Grande.  I did;t see much while I was there  until four coyotes ran across the road.  They quickly disappeared but I managed to snap a couple of pictures before they ran off.

  • 2017 4A and 5A Colorado High School Football Finals

I photographed the 2017 4A and 5A high school football finals at Mile High Stadium on Saturday.  Pomona defeated Eaglecrest 56-49 in the highest scoring 5A final in state history and Pueblo South won its first championship, defeating Pine Creek 25-14.

  • 2017 3A Football Semifinal

Longmont took on Erie in one of the 3A high school  football semifinals Saturday.  The Erie Tigers rolled behind a strong ground game and stingy defense, 31-14.

  • Broomfield vs Loveland 4A Quarterfinal

The Broomfield Eagles pulled their second straight upset defeating #1 seed Loveland 28-27 in the first overtime of Saturday’s quarterfinal matchup in high school football.  Despite 3 costly fumbles, Broomfield hung on for the win as Loveland missed an extra point in overtime.

  • DU @ CU Men’s Basketball 2017

DU lost to CU at the Coors Events Center last night, 89-62.  It was tough homecoming for DU head coach, Rodney Billups, who was an assistant at CU for six years before taking the head job at DU.

  • CU vs USC Football 2017

USC defeated Colorado in football 38-24 at Folsom Field.  USC quarterback Sam Darnold looks like the real deal as he threw for over 300 yards and ran for a long touchdown.

  • 2017 CHSAA 5A Softball Playoffs

I covered the CHSAA 5A softball playoffs for the fifth straight year.  No shortage of high drama and emotion this year.  Congratulations to Legend high school for winning the 2017 5A championship, the Titans’ first title of any kind.  They defeated Fossil Ridge 8-3 in the final game to take home the trophy.  The semifinals were particularly crazy as Fossil Ridge defeated #1 seed Eaglecrest, 20-16 and Legend took down perennial favorite Legacy, 10-6.

  • 4A High School Boy’s Soccer

Due to the recent snow, I had a chance to cover a double header of 4A boy’s soccer at Erie High School yesterday.  Erie hosted Roosevelt and Niwot moved its home match against Silver Creek.  As playoff time nears, emotions were high and the play was very competitive.  Erie defeated Rosevelt 3-0 and Niwot defeated Silver Creek 2-1 in OT.

  • Utah Fall Color

I spent a long weekend in northern Utah shooting fall color. The maples are spectacular this year near Heber City and on the Nebo Mountain Loop.  With heavy snow and generally bad weather wreaking havoc on theColorado fall scene, I headed across the border to Utah.  I had always wanted to see the maples there and finally had the chance.  I visited several of the canyons, including Pine Creek, Big Cottonwood Canyon, and Provo Canyon.  The best color was on the Deer Creek Overlook which is located between Salt Lake and Heber City.  I also drove the Nebo Mountain Loop south of Provo which also had some dazzling color, especially near the Bear Canyon Campground.

Heber City is a pretty little town on the back side of the Wasatch Front across from Salt Lake City.  It is a perfect place to explore the various canyons to the west such as Cascade Springs, Pine Creek, and Big Cottonwood.  I walked around Cascade Springs which is a natural spring and creek.  A nature trail winds through the area. Dispersed camping is available along the road past the springs.  This portion of the road road is quite rough so bring the 4×4.  I found some cool places to shoot maples.  The color was quite vibrant in this area.  From there, I explored the Deer Creek Overlook.  This was located down the main road just a couple of miles from the springs.  This is a great place to watch the sunrise.  Too bad there were so many clouds that morning.

That afternoon I did the Nebo Mountain Loop.  This road loops from Payson to Nephi a few miles south of Spanish Forks.  It has a number of highlights including great views of bald Mountain and Nebo Mountain. The best color on the loop is found near the southern end by the Bear Canyon campground.

  • Granby Mountain Bike Race

I went up to Granby to photograph the mountain bike race sponsored by the Colorado High School Cycling League.  Teams from around the state competed.  It was a lot of fun.  The changing aspen provided a dramatic backdrop for the racers.  I photographed the JV race but freshman and varsity teams also competed.  I look forward to shooting more races in the future.
