I photographed the 4A football playoff game between Riverdale Ridge and Monarch last weekend. I witnessed my first high school overtime game. The rules are related to college rule but the ball is placed at the opponent’s 10-yard line. Monarch stopped Riverdale at 1 to seal the victory, 14-7. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen as much action in such a low-scoring game. Monarch’s defense line had a field day recording 4 sacks and 2 strip fumbles in the second half to make like miserable for the Riverdale quarterbacks.

CHSAA 4A/5A Football Finals 2023
It was time in Colorado football for the #2 seeds to finally get their due. Erie defeated #1 seed Palmer Ridge 20-6 to take the 4A title while Columbine ran all over Cherry Creek 28-14 to claim the 5A title. Columbine ended Creek’s bid to claim its fifth consecutive state title. Perhaps the most enduring scene of the day was Erie quarterback Blake Barnett holding the championship trophy aloft after barely being able to walk the last part of the game due to a badly sprained ankle.

Erie Montrose 4A Football Semifinal
Erie defeated Montrose 29-28 to advance to the Colorado 4A state football final Saturday. Montrose edged out to a 28-14 lead in the fourth quarter only to see Erie rally with 5:30 remaining. After scoring a touchdown, Erie recovered an on-side kick. It marched down the field and got the tying score. It then ran in a two-point conversion to take a one point lead. Montrose wasn’t done yet, however. After converting a long pass and marching down to the Erie 30, Montrose would fumble, sealing the victory for Erie.

Fort Collins vs Legacy High School Football
I photographed the craziest high school football game I’ve ever seen yesterday between Legacy and Fort Collins. Legacy jumped out to a 23-0 lead in the third quarter only to lose 30-29 behind a furious comeback by Fort Collins.
Fort Collins’s starting quarterback was injured on the first play of the second half. Ez Campos relieved and promptly was strip sacked in the endzone for a Legacy touchdown. His next play went for an interception. However, Fort Collins would rally as Legacy fumbled on its next two possessions. With Fort Collins trailing 23-16 with 3:45 remaining, Campos hooked up with Dorion McGarity for a 66-yard touchdown. Legacy answered on their next drive. Facing a 3rd and 25 from its own 47, the Legacy quarterback found Sam Winter over the middle. Winter broke several tackles on his way to the end zone for the go ahead score with 1:16 remaining. Unfortunately for Legacy, a bad snap spoiled the PAT. Then it was time for Campos and McGarity to work their magic again. With 45 seconds left, Campos heaved a pass deep over the middle that McGarity snared for another long TD, this one 67 yards. With the extra point, Fort Collins went ahead 30-29. Nicky McGuire sealed the win win an interception.

Academy Football Candids
It was media photo day for our football team at the Academy of Charter Schools in Westminster, CO, Friday, so I took the opportunity to shoot a few candids of the players. Football candids are a fun and relaxing way to photograph players. I especially like this type of photography because it gives me a chance to show the lighter side of the players. I posed a few players and also shot some candids of the players having fun. I used a variety of lenses and techniques for this shoot. I especially enjoyed shooting some closeups of the punter. You never get a fell for how quick and powerful this motion is until you’re up close. A gracious thank you goes out to the yearbook staff for inviting me to be a part of this fun afternoon.
