CHSAA High School Softball Playoffs
I photographed the CHSAA state high school softball playoffs this weekend. It was an exciting tournament with lots of emotion. I could have done without the freezing cold temperatures, though. I shot both the 4A and 5A playoff games. Legacy High School won the 5A title and Wheat Ridge won the 4A title.
I spent four days in Minnesota and Wisconsin to check out the fall color. I went to Banning State Park in Minnesota and Lac Courtes Oreilles in Wisconsin. The color was spotty. Not a great year for hardwoods in the upper midwest. There were some trees that turned bright colors but not whole forests like in years past. The fallen leaves did make for some nice closeups, however.
I serve on the advisory board of Families of Homicide Victims and Missing Person, a victim’s organization that deals with cold case homicides and missing persons cases. I attended their annual meting this past weekend and photographed and took video of the meeting. The conference was highlighted by Kim Goldman’s Keynote address. She touched the audience with her story of loss and grief after her brother Ron Goldman was killed in 1994. I can’t believe it’s been almost twenty years since the O.J. case. It was a moving event to cover. Thanks to Joe Pryor, a high school student and budding photographer, for helping me out as well.
I photographed the football game this past Saturday between Colorado State and UTEP. It was a fun game with big swings. COlorado State moved out to a 28-7 halftime lead, UTEP tied it with about 7 minutes left in the third quarter and the CSU pulled away in the fourth quarter. It was definitely an entertaining game with plenty of big plays. As a fan, you needed to like uniforms, though. It was orange out day at CSU and UTEP has lots of orange as well.
While I was in Longmont photographing the Fireball Run, I was introduced to a wonderful rose garden. Roosevelt Park in Longmont boasts one of the finest rose gardens in Colorado, if not the U.S. Located in the northwest corner of the park, the garden is part of the veteran’s memorial in the park. It is truly a wonderful place and one of the few things in Longmont untouched by the recent flood.

I went up to Longmont Saturday to photograph some of the activities surrounding the Fireball Run. The race went from Longmont, CO to Riverside, CA. It benefits missing children and each racer had a picture of a missing child on their car. Some of the cars were quite creative. My favorite was the Charlie’s Angels Ferrari. I’m sure the driver of that car was disappointed she couldn’t exceed the speed limit during the race. The event supports a worthwhile cause and is a first rate production. The rain stopped long enough in Parker Friday to get in a football game between Legacy and Chaparral. The sun even came out during the second half. It was a low-scoring game but entertaining. Chaparral made less mistakes and hung on for the win. The game featured more than one jarring hit by Chaparral defensive back Jaylynn Rapp.

I shot my first Broomfield Cup football game this past weekend. It was a lot of fun to see two teams as spirited as Legacy and Broomfield going at it. Fittingly, the game came down to the last play. Broomfield got stopped short of the end zone on fourth down and Legacy won, 27-23.

I shot the boy’s soccer game Tuesday night between Thornton and Horizon. I saw some great moments. As usual, goals were at a premium and the excitement level of the kids when they scored was electric.

I shot a few games of the Erie High School Softball tournament this weekend. I enjoy shooting action photographs of softball especially in a tournament setting like this. Teams from all over Colorado and some from Oklahoma competed. I saw some great softball being played. I’ve posted a few images from the games.
