Great Blue Herons have taken up residence at Metzger Farm in Westminster. They are nesting in the trees above the lake there. The chicks have mostly hatched but some birds were still building nests when I was there. I got to see a mother feeding her chicks and a few birds gathering sticks. Unfortunately, the city has decided to restrict access almost completely from the nests. They have erected a fence blocking access along the shore. This makes photography quite challenging. I am all for protecting wildlife but this seems extreme. A fenced perimeter 30 feet from the nests seems logical, not 200 feet. Herons and other birds have nested quite peacefully at City Park and Prospect Park in the past without any interference from humans. Oh, well. Bring a long lens or some binoculars and enjoy the show.
