I took a drive near Steamboat Springs, CO to see the fall color this week. It was really vibrant this year with numerous reds and oranges interspersed amongst the normal yellow aspen. The weather was perfect, too. It was a great chance to try out my new Hasselblad X2dii. What an amazing camera!

Utah Fall Color
Since the color in Colorado was a bit muted this year, I drove over to Utah to check out fall color there. I’m glad I did. It was much more vibrant than Colorado, and the maples were still putting on a show. I drove up through Price on 191 to 6 and then took a turn toward Strawberry Reservoir. Strawberry Ridge had some nice color. There were many fishing boats out on Strawberry Reservoir which made me wish I had brought my kayak. I then drove onto Heber City where I headed up the Cascade Springs road toward Mt. Timpanogos. The maples were beautiful along this stretch. I camped at Mill Canyon overlooking Mt. Timpanogos. The sunrise on the peak was the highlight of the trip. I hiked a couple of miles up Mt. Timpanogos and stopped to admire Timpanogos Falls. The view overlooking the valley from here was awesome. I wish I had more time to hike further up the mountain. On the way back to town, I tried to drive the dirt road leading through parts of Wasatch Mountain State Park but the road was too rough to keep continuing on. I finished my trip by going through the portion of Wasatch Mountain Park that is north of Midway and headed up to Park City. The aspens there were fabulous. The trail at the summit went through some extraordinarily tall aspen. All in all, this was a very good trip.

Maroon Bells Fall Foliage
I reserved a parking space at the Maroon Bells to park at Maroon Lake. Unfortunately, two circumstances made photography challenging. One, the fall is a week late this year due to excess moisture during the summer. Only about 25% of the aspen had turned. Two, Maroon Lake is way low. I don’t know if it is beavers of releasing the water due to water compacts but the classic reflection shot of Maroon Lake is now impossible. Only about half the lake remains and the forest service has roped off the path and required to stay on it so access is about 50 feet from the water. The area is still beautiful but the iconic shot I fear is a thing of the past here. Luckily, the parking reservation system has limited crowds. I look forward to mid week when I can get back up in the high country to photograph the aspen.

Flattops Fall Color
The Flattops wilderness in western Colorado is one of the best places to see fall color in Colorado. There are large aspen forests seemingly all through the wilderness. I recently drove from New Castle to Buford and then across the Flattops on County Road 8 to Yampa. I also drove a long section of the Deep Lake ROad near Dotsero. Despite dire predictions of a poor fall in the northern half of the state due to lack of moisture, the colors are some of the best I’ve seen in recent memory. Ripple Creek and Dunkley Passes were both particularly vibrant. I even saw a beautiful sunset atop Ripple Creek Pass. The trees have turned about 50% and many are still green so hopefully the show will last another 7-10 days.
A word of caution should be issued. Wear bright colors if you go. Fall is hunting season and the Flattops is full of hunters this time of year.
Getting there:
There are several roads into the Flattops. County Road 8 runs between Yampa and Meeker for about 75 miles. A detour to Trappers Lake can be made about 30 miles from the Meeker end. Roads also run to Deep Lake (5 miles north of Dotsero) and YamColo Reservoir (also from the Yampa end).

Colorado Fall Color 2019
I spent 4 days in the Colorado high country last week. The aspen were at peak or just beginning to turn in some places. Grand Mesa and Boreas Pass were the best spots to catch fall color.
Aspen
Maroon Bells had some nice aspen but the area was not at peak yet. The water in Maroon Lake was unusually low so it made for bad reflection photos. I did get to see a beautiful sunrise at the start of the Capitol Peak trail.
Grand Mesa
I found a couple of nice spots to see fall color on the Grand Mesa near Grand Junction, CO. The best seemed to be around Lake.
Boreas Pass
The aspen were turning near peak color last weekend on Boreas Pass near Breckenridge.
Flattops
I took a drove through the flattops. While the aspen had not yet turned, the scrub oak were amazingly vibrant.
