Broomfield defeated Columbine Wednesday to advance to the 5A girl’s soccer semifinals. Columbine struck first with a goal 12 minutes into the second half. The lead stood up until Broomfield redirected a corner kick with 2:39 left to tie it at 1-1. Then Broomfield scored quickly in overtime to win the match and advance.
#18 Seed Fruita Monument traveled to Broomfield Saturday to take on the #15 seeded Eagles in the 5A Boy’s Basketball Playoff. Fruita won in overtime 83-76. Broomfield was down 6 with just over a minute to play but Steve Croell’s three pointer drew them even with about 15 seconds left on the clock. Broomfield had a chance to win in regulation but missed two free throws that would’ve sealed the game. Fruita prevailed in overtime as Broomfield again missed two free throws with 10 seconds left and Fruita hit a three pointer to win it with two seconds remaining on the clock. It was a hard-fought thrilling win for Fruita.

The Broomfield Eagles pulled their second straight upset defeating #1 seed Loveland 28-27 in the first overtime of Saturday’s quarterfinal matchup in high school football. Despite 3 costly fumbles, Broomfield hung on for the win as Loveland missed an extra point in overtime.

I got back from my trip to Utah over Thanksgiving break just in time to photograph the Broomfield vs Windsor 4A Football Semifinals today. Broomfield pulled away late to advance to the championship game.
I photographed the semifinals and finals of the 2016 CHSAA 5A High School Softball tournament again this year. The final game was fantastic. Cherokee Trail defeated favorite Broomfield 1-0 in the final to take home the championship. Perhaps more than any other game I’ve covered, this game exemplified the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat. Cherokee Trail’s Chloe Knapp hit a go ahead home run in the top of the eight inning and Broomfield’s Lindsey Malkin missed a game-winning home run by a few feet to end the game. Most of Broomfield’s team was seniors so the loss stung especially hard.
The playoffs are here for spring sports in Colorado. I covered the 5A girl’s soccer game between Broomfield and Chaparral last night in Broomfield. The Eagles won easily, 6-0. I got some amazing action shots, particularly of Chaparral’s goalie who was under constant pressure. Enjoy!
