Congratulations to the Riverdale Ridge girls and Resurrection Christian boys basketball teams for winning the CHSAA 4A 2024 high school basketball state titles.

It was state championship Saturday yesterday for high school basketball in Colorado. Grandview defeated Monarch for the 6A girl’s title 38-28 while Denver East raced past Fossil Ridge 82-61 to take home the 6A boy’s crown. Lack of height did in Monarch as Grandview’s 6′-4″ Sienna Betts dominated inside, scoring 20 points and grabbing 20 rebounds. Meanwhile, Denver East used a balanced attack to blitz Nick Randall and the Fossil Ridge Sabercats. In 4A action, Holy Family took home both state titles. The girls were a season-long #1 seed but the boys surprised a lot of observers, taking home the crown as the #17 seed. They never had a hone playoff game en route to grabbing the trophy.
The Erie High School softball team got hot at the right time. Ranked as only a #14 seed entering the Colorado State High School softball tournament, Erie faced long odds to capture its 12th title. But after defeating defending champion Holy Family (#2 seed) and Golden (#1 seed), Erie earned every bit of its record 12th title. Using the long ball 4 times, Erie prevailed 13-9 in eight innings.
I photographed the 2017 4A and 5A high school football finals at Mile High Stadium on Saturday. Pomona defeated Eaglecrest 56-49 in the highest scoring 5A final in state history and Pueblo South won its first championship, defeating Pine Creek 25-14.

I photographed for the first time the Colorado High School Hockey Finals at Magness Arena at the University of Denver. Monarch played in its fifth straight final and won its first championship, 2-1 over Regis Jesuit. The game was very exciting and game down to the last shot. I hadn’t shot hockey in a decade so it was a lot of fun to get back to the sport. I was amazed at how good some of the players were. It was cool to see a team win its first championship as well.
I photographed the 2016 Colorado High School Volleyball Finals at the Denver Coliseum again this year. Â The matches in 5A were unbelievable this year as no one dominant team emerged. Â Every match seemed to be hotly contested and several went five sets. Â Fossil Ridge won 5A in dramatic fashion, in what else, a fifth set. Â I also covered matches in other classifications including the 3A and 4A finals. Congratulations to Lewis Palmer and Eaton for winning titles again this year in 4A and 3A respectively. Â The emotion the girls displayed was great to photograph as well. Â As always, I tried to photograph volleyball from a number of different angles, including from up in the stands so I could get a better perspective on plays at the net.
I photographed the 2016 Colorado High School Basketball 4A and 5A Finals at the Coors Events Center this past weekend. Â While all the drama was reserved for the semifinal round, the finals did provide some emotional moments. Â Pueblo West won its first state boys title while the Overland boys and Valor Christian girls teams won back-to-back titles. Â I always enjoy photographing high school basketball since so much passion is on display.

I photographed the Colorado High School Boy’s Soccer Finals for 3A and 4A this past Saturday at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Denver. Â The weather was beautiful and there were some great soccer shots to be had. Â Kent Denver defeated Fountain Valley to take the 3A crown and Evergreen nipped The Classical Academy, 1-0, to take the 4A title.
I photographed the Colorado 4A and 5A basketball finals this past weekend. Â Twelve games in three days. Â What a grueling but rewarding task. Â I love shooting high school basketball because you see raw emotion on display at every turn. Â Colorado also has a Top 100 basketball recruit in Overland’s Deron Davis so it was fun to see him in action as well. Â A couple of upsets and an overtime game made for a good tournament. Â Congrats to Broomfield and Valor Christian for winning in girls and Overland and Air Academy for winning on the boys side.
I shot the game from a number of angles. Â I had the typical 70-200 and 300mm lenses. Â I also used a remote above the basket but got nothing usable from it. Â I will know next time to set it up higher and using a 16-35 lens instead of a 24-70. Â This shot calls for a really wide lens.
I got the opportunity to photograph the Colorado high school softball tournament this weekend. Â The tournament featured a number of upsets and dramatic finishes. Â Grandview defeated Broomfield 3-2 in 10 innings and then advanced to the final to play the #1 seeded Fossil Ridge. Â Grandview scored 6 runs in the third inning to take the state title, 6-2. Â As always, the games highlighted the joy of sports.
