It was a beautiful Saturday in December for the Colorado 4A/5A High School Football Finals. In 4A, Pine Creek easily handled Broomfield 34-3 while Cherry Creek dominated upset-minded Columbine 35-10. Dave Logan won his second state as the head coach of Cherry Creek and now has seven titles to his credit.

4A CHSAA Softball Finals 2019
The Erie High School softball team got hot at the right time. Ranked as only a #14 seed entering the Colorado State High School softball tournament, Erie faced long odds to capture its 12th title. But after defeating defending champion Holy Family (#2 seed) and Golden (#1 seed), Erie earned every bit of its record 12th title. Using the long ball 4 times, Erie prevailed 13-9 in eight innings.

2019 High School Girls’ Soccer Playoffs
The second round of playoffs is not usually a time for major upsets but 2 happened this week in the Colorado High School Girl’s Soccer playoffs. First, #1 seed Broomfield lost to #16 seed Rock Canyon, 1-0. Rock Canyon came out the aggressor and never let up to put away the game. On Saturday, #21 seed Vail Mountain School shocked #5 seed Stargate School with 3 goals in the last 5 minutes of regulation to pull out the 4-3 victory in dramatic come-from-behind fashion. I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many goals in such little time. Can’t wait for the finals in the 22nd.

Bear Creek vs Green Mountain Basketball Pepsi Center
I had the chance to photograph the boy’s basketball game between Green Mountain and Bear Creek at the Pepsi Center earlier this week. The Nuggets sponsor an annual series of games that give high school teams a chance to play at the Pepsi Center. It was a lot of fun to cover. Bear Creek won this matchup and shut down Green Mountain from the start. It is always fun to shoot a game under the good lighting of the Pepsi Center in comparison to most high school gyms.

Broomfield Legacy Boy’s Soccer Quarterfinal 18
It was the battle of Broomfield between Legacy and Broomfield high schools in the 5A boy’s soccer quarterfinals Saturday. While Broomfield has been a perennial contender, Legacy was new comer to the party this year. The match featured physical play throughout and some incredible athletic plays including a bicycle kick. The two battled to a 1-1 tie after regulation so it was on to overtime. Broomfield pulled out a dramatic 2-1 win in double overtime to advance to the semifinals Wednesday.

2018 CHSAA Softball Championships
I photographed the 2018 CHSAA softball championships once again this year. This is the 5th consecutive year I have covered this event. This year’s games weren’t quote as dramatic as last year’s finals, but the games were still filled with exciting moments. Congratulations to Legend which repeated as 5A champs by defeating Cherokee Trail 8-4. Holy Family took home the 4A crown by defeating Mountain View 10-3.

Academy Football Candids
It was media photo day for our football team at the Academy of Charter Schools in Westminster, CO, Friday, so I took the opportunity to shoot a few candids of the players. Football candids are a fun and relaxing way to photograph players. I especially like this type of photography because it gives me a chance to show the lighter side of the players. I posed a few players and also shot some candids of the players having fun. I used a variety of lenses and techniques for this shoot. I especially enjoyed shooting some closeups of the punter. You never get a fell for how quick and powerful this motion is until you’re up close. A gracious thank you goes out to the yearbook staff for inviting me to be a part of this fun afternoon.

Broomfield Columbine Girl’s Soccer Quarterfinal
Broomfield defeated Columbine Wednesday to advance to the 5A girl’s soccer semifinals. Columbine struck first with a goal 12 minutes into the second half. The lead stood up until Broomfield redirected a corner kick with 2:39 left to tie it at 1-1. Then Broomfield scored quickly in overtime to win the match and advance.

2017 CHSAA 5A Softball Playoffs
I covered the CHSAA 5A softball playoffs for the fifth straight year. No shortage of high drama and emotion this year. Congratulations to Legend high school for winning the 2017 5A championship, the Titans’ first title of any kind. They defeated Fossil Ridge 8-3 in the final game to take home the trophy. The semifinals were particularly crazy as Fossil Ridge defeated #1 seed Eaglecrest, 20-16 and Legend took down perennial favorite Legacy, 10-6.

Boulder Legacy Boy’s Soccer
The boy’s soccer game between Boulder and Legacy high schools was a classic tonight. Legacy defeated the reigning 5A state champs, 2-1. The game was filled with some great action and one of the most intense goal celebrations I’ve seen by the Legacy players. Let’s hope these two teams meet again in the playoffs.
