One of my favorite places to visit in Rocky Mountain National Park in winter is the trail to Dream and Emerald Lakes. The first light hits the mountains behind the lakes at just the right angle at sunrise while it takes several minutes longer to hit the peaks in other nearby valleys. I snowshoed up the short mile-long trail this week to catch the sunrise. I was not disappointed. I got good color on the peaks and even had some clouds to make for good color in the sky. I even stopped to shoot some macros of the ice on Dream Lake. The fierce winds in this area make for some spectacular patterns in the ice.

Sprague Lake in winter
I ventured up to Sprague Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park yesterday to check out the sunrise. While the sun take a while to hit the peaks directly in back of the lake the color in the sky during a winter sunrise is spectacular. I was one of only two people at the lake so it was a peaceful, serene setting to take in a pretty sunrise as well. Since it is located off the Bear Lake road, Sprague Lake can be overrun with tourists in the summer so it was a welcome change to see so few people there.

Boulder Spring Snow
Boulder sets its all-time record for snowfall in a winter with this past storm. The spring snow storm dumped 15 inches on the city bringing the annual total to 151 inches. April has been a very snowy month so far. It was a beautiful morning to be outside despite the 5 degree temperatures. I am not a big fan of spring snow, but I know the snow is great for the plants. Can’t wait for the wildflowers to show up in June!

Winter in Canyonlands National Park
My son and I recently spent a couple of days in Canyonlands National Park–one in the Island in the Sky District and one in the Needles section. I like visiting Utah and Canyonlands in the winter because the skies are often clear and the crowds are thinned out and the Parks less busy. On the first evening, we took in sunset at Green River overlook and then headed to Mesa Arch to shoot some star trails. Since we were the only ones at Mesa Arch, it gave a completely different feeling than the normal sunrise time where 20 or more photographers jockey for position under the arch. On the second day, we headed to the Needles. Unlike Arches, the Needles is virtually deserted in the winter. The rangers don’t collect fees and the visitor’s center is closed. Not surprisingly, there were only a handful of cars in the park. We hiked the trail to Druid Arch through the Needles area. We got a late start and didn’t quite make it to the arch, but the hike along the trail provided some great photo ops. Much of the Druid Arch trail winds along a wash and is lined with many dead junipers. I took a bunch of photos in hopes of getting a few good ones to convert to black and white. On the way back, we were treated to golden light on the rock formations. I stopped at Pothole Point to catch the last rays of the sun on the canyon walls in the distance. The point provides just enough elevation to get above the junipers and give a clear view.

Dream Lake Snowshoe
I snowshoed up to Dream Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park last week with my kids. Â This is the perfect trail for kids. Â It is not too long and the kids love playing on the ice coating Dream Lake at the end of the hike. Â At just over a mile in length, the trail is fairly easy with only a couple of steep sections. Â It is heavily used so the snow gets packed firm. Â Snowshoes aren;t even necessary most of the trip. The cleats certainly help on the ice, though.
The lake is a good spot to do winter photography. Â The ice makes for some cool abstract compositions and the lake itself it surrounded by mountain peaks. Â This place is a true test of HDR software, however. Â The lake sits in shade while the peaks are bathed in sunshine.
Directions
To access Dream Lake, take the Bear Lake road until it ends in the national park. Â The trail ascends to the left from the Bear Lake parking lot. Â Dream Lake is 1.1 miles from the trailhead. Â You can continue another 3/4 of a mile or so to reach Emerald Lake.
