  • Thornton Community Band

I’m a clarinetist in the Thornton Community Band. I had fun shooting some promo photos of our band before our last concert at Scott Carpenter Park in Thornton. For one of the pieces, we played Dixieland Funeral which featured a Dixieland band. Thanks to all who participated and to our fans who came out to watch. It was a fun night in the park. Come watch us play at our next concert as we kick off Fourth of July festivities at Scott Carpenter Park on July 4th.

Kansas City Ice Hawks Club Hockey

I had the chance this weekend to photograph the Kansas City Ice Hawks in a club hockey tournament in Denver this weekend. It was a lot of fun to watch some up and coming hockey players take the ice.

I photographed TIGAR gymnastics in Wheat Ridge last week. I thought I would share some of the images. What a fun place for a summer camp!

  • Rainy Day Flowers

Memorial Day weekend was a washout in Colorado this year. It was rainy and gray all three days. I haven’t seen a holiday weekend this gloomy since I left Connecticut in 1992. But the drizzle and light rain did provide some great conditions to photograph flowers. I photographed some flowers in my backyard and then headed to the Denver Botanical Garden. It was peak bloom for iris and many peonies so there was no shortage of subjects to point my camera at. I used mainly my Laowa 2x 100 mm macro lens and my Sony a7rV camera. Enjoy!

  • Zion area

    Zion area

I traveled to southern Utah near Zion National Park. My two big stops were the Subway hike in Zion and White Pocket in the Paria/Vermillion Cliffs Wilderness.

    The Subway

I had made one prior attempt to hike the Subway in Zion but never made it past the waterfall you have to hike over. This time I came prepared with water shoes. The hike starts off the Kolob Reservoir Road about 13 miles from the visitor center. I picked up my permit and headed to the trailhead. The first part of the hike meanders through junipers and then descends steeply (400 ft.) to the canyon floor around the 1.5 mile mark. The trail then skirts the creek for the next couple of miles, crossing it several times. There are a few areas where the trial climbs over boulders and trees. In April, the water wasn’t too high so this was not much of an issue. At mile 3, I reached a large, stepped waterfall with huge boulders in the creek. The only way to keep going is to walk through the water up the waterfall. The stair steps are relatively easy to climb so this was not much of an issue. But watershoes are helpful here since the water can be six inches deep in places. In about a half mile, I came to another stepped cascade. This one is a beautiful spot for some photography. This falls can be negotiated by walking around to the right of it. Just above this fall, is the famous crack where water flows through like a train track. It makes for some cool photos but the rock is incredibly slippery here so beware. The Subway is just a couple hundred yards around the bend from this area. The Subway itself has some amazing sculpted pools and the curved rock that forms the Subway. I was lucky enough to have a couple of large tree branches sticking out of the pools to create some cool looks. The trail continues up some small riffles (very slick) to where it reaches hip deep pools. Just beyond is a little waterfall that I did not see. Little too cold in April to trudge through the pools. The famous tree log is one level higher, but I would have needed a 15 ft rope to ascend the falls to get there.

    White Pocket

The next stop I made was at White Pocket. It is located just south of Big Water, UT but to reach the area requires about 1.5 hours of backroad travel on 4-wheel roads. I went with an outfitter to avoid getting stuck in the sand along the way. I camped out to try and take advantage of the golden hour and overnight but clouds ruined my plan. Sunset and overnight were a bust. I did get some nice light in the morning so here are a few photographs of the very bizarre White Pocket area. The area gets its name from the holes or “pockets” in the rock that trap rain water. There was a little water in some of them so I was able to capture a couple of reflections. I also hiked to some of the more remote formations that torus don’t stop at. One was reminiscent of South Coyote Buttes with lots of sandstone fins. Very cool.

  • Sandhill Crane Migration, Nebraska

    Sandhill Crane Migration, Nebraska

It has been twenty years since I had been out to Nebraska to witness the sandhill crime migration so I thought I ‘d take a day and head northeast. Every spring, the sandhills descend on central Nebraska en masse so they can roost in the Platte River valley. There are upwards of 500,000 cranes in the area so it is a spectacle not to be missed.

This year the weather cooperated. Unlike past years when the weather in late March can be unpredictable, this year it was sunny and around 70. Perfect. The sunrise and sunsets were spectacular as well, providing the perfect backdrop for groups of cranes flying in to roost in the river for the night or take off for the fields in the morning.

The biggest collection of cranes can be found between Kearney (Exit 272) and Grand Island (Exit 320). During the day, the birds can be seen in the local farm fields fattening up on left over corn kernels from the previous year’s harvest. They will also take flight and move from field to field. Just before sunrise or just after sunset is when the real show begins, however. The birds fly in waves back to the river or take off from the river. The sun rises or sets in a big orange ball over the river. It looks like something out of an African safari.

This year I went to the Plautz viewing deck near Gibbon to watch sunset while I stopped at the river bridge just east of Kearney (exit 279) for sunrise. Other options include guided tours from the Rowe Sanctuary (located between Kearney and Gibbon) or Fort Kearney State Park. The latter has a bicycle bridge over the river that provides good access. This one gets crowded so I prefer the other locations.

It was a fun tournament as always to photograph Enjoy some of the best shots form the weekend.

  • Broomfield Riverdale Ridge Girls Sweet 16

It was going to be long shot that #14 seed Riverdale Ridge could pull the upset against #3 Broomfield in the girl’s basketball Sweet 16 round. But it helps when you have the best player in the state in Brihanna Crittendon. The 6’3″ junior muscled her way through double teams all night to give the Ravens a thrilling 44-41 victory. Riverdale raced out to an early lead behind Crittendon to take an 8 point lead into halftime. The lead grew to as many as 15 in the 3rd quarter but that’ when Broomfield began to chip away. The Eagles would tie the game at 41 with just over a minute left. But after a free throw by Crittendon put the Eagles up one, 42-41, Broomfield committed a couple of costly turnovers including throwing a pass out of bounds after corralling a defensive rebound. Broomfield missed a tying three with a couple of ticks left and the celebration was on.

  • Erie vs. Horizon Boy’s Basketball

There is nothing better than an upset bid in sports. Last night, the Erie boy’s basketball team gave everything it had to take down ninth-ranked Horizon. But Erie’s dream died at the buzzer as Callen Gebhardt’s jumper in the lane rimmed out as time expired. The Hawks had led most of the night until Erie surged ahead 50-48, with under a minute left. But Horizon’s Noah Sokolowski hit a put back and converted the and 1 to put Horizon up 1, 51-50 with just a few seconds remaining.
