    Colorado 4A Basketball Finals

Congratulations to the Riverdale Ridge girls and Resurrection Christian boys basketball teams for winning the CHSAA 4A 2024 high school basketball state titles.

  • CU ASU Basketball 2024

Colorado men’s basketball team returned home from a rough road trip by taking on the Arizona State Sun Devils Thursday night at the Coors Events Center. The Buffs got off to a hot start, racing out to a 12-0 and 21-3 lead to begin the first half. While ASU cut the lead down to 4 toward the end of the first half they, could never get over the hump and the Buffs rolled to a 72-60 victory.

  • Miami

    Miami

My family and I traveled to Miami over Christmas this year. We took in a sunrise at South Beach, strolled through the Art Deco district, and toured Viscaya. I also grabbed a quick walk around Bill Baggs State Park on Key Biscayne as well as Homestead Bayfront Park. Unfortunately, our snorkel adventure in Biscayne National Park got canceled due to rain. Winter weather is unpredictable everywhere I guess.

  • Florida Wildlife

    Florida Wildlife

My family and I spent a week in southern Florida over the holidays and while we were there, we took in some of the wildlife refuges and the Everglades. Regrettably, the weather was not exactly picture postcard worthy, but I still enjoyed the trip. Florida is always a good spot for bird photography.

    Tropical Botanical Garden

One of the first places we went was the Tropical Botanical Garden just south of Miami. Featuring several hundred acres of native plants it provides a spectacular backdrop for bird photography. The garden also houses a butterfly pavilion so it was cool to see that as well. The highlight was a crocodile sunning itself along the shores of the one the many lakes in the garden.

    Bill Baggs State Park

Our next stop was Bill Baggs State Park on Key Biscayne. I had wanted to see the lighthouse but the grounds were closed due to renovation. I settled for shooting some birds along the fishing pier. I found a snowy egret and a great egret. I also spotted a small raccoon wandering the picnic shelter.

    Everglades National Park

The following day we took a trip to the Everglades. I had never been so it was a chance to see something new. Most of the southern section of the park is made up of seagrass marsh. There was a constant smattering of birds but no mass collection of anything. We walked the Anhinga trail. I did get to see a great egret gulp down an anole, though. I also spotted a few manatees and a crocodile at the far end of the drive.

    Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge

The last place we stopped was the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge near Titusville, FL. This is a spectacular refuge that boasts a number of bird species. I spotted several kinds of herons, spoonbills, and many ospreys. I had fun watching the osprey snag fish. I just wish the light wa sa little better to highlight the birds.

    CU UNC Basketball 2023

The Colorado men’s basketball team continued its torrid offensive pace Friday night at home against Northern Colorado. A week after putting 90 points on last year’s finalist Miami, the Buffs put another 90 spot on the board, easily rolling past the Bears, 90-68. Even more impressive was the fact that the Buffs did it without sharp shooting forward Cody Williams who sat out his second straight game with a wrist injury. KJ Simpson went off for 21 while center Eddie Lampkin chipped in a double double of 10-10, including two monster dunks in the second half.

    CHSAA 4A/5A Football Finals 2023

It was time in Colorado football for the #2 seeds to finally get their due. Erie defeated #1 seed Palmer Ridge 20-6 to take the 4A title while Columbine ran all over Cherry Creek 28-14 to claim the 5A title. Columbine ended Creek’s bid to claim its fifth consecutive state title. Perhaps the most enduring scene of the day was Erie quarterback Blake Barnett holding the championship trophy aloft after barely being able to walk the last part of the game due to a badly sprained ankle.

  • Pear leaves

    Pear leaves

I walked around the neighborhood today taking pictures of the last vestiges of fall color. Some pear trees and one oak still had some leaves left. I used my 85mm to blur the background on a handful of shots. I like how the background melts away with this lens.

  • CHSAA Boy’s soccer finals 2023

The CHSAA boy’s soccer finals were held yesterday at Weidner field in Colorado Springs. 2A-5A champions were crowned on a long day of soccer. Crested Butte started the day off by capturing the 2A title over Bishop Machebeuf, 1-0. Colorado Academy then rolled past Coal Ridge, 3-1. Battle Mountain won a highly contested game against Northfield 2-0. NOrthfield had multiple scoring chances in the second half, putting constant pressure on the Battle Mountain end of the field but couldn’t;t come away with a goal. Then Broomfield won a thriller in the night cap, edging Denver East 1-1 in penalty kicks. The Broomfield goalie stopped two shots in the penalty kick round to give Broomfield the win.

  • Kodachrome State Park

    Kodachrome State Park

I visited Kodachrome Basin State Park near Cannonville, UT on my recent trip to southern Utah. I had been there once before but the weather let me down. This time it was perfect. I went to Chimney Rock, Ballerina Spire, and Angel’s Place. Kodachrome features some pretty reddish sandstone spires so it was a the perfect place to be near sunset to watch the rock glow red.

  • White Pocket 2023

    White Pocket 2023

I first went to White Pocket in 2012. It was a surreal experience as the swirls in the rock formation s defy explanation. I had a chance to go back this week and was not disappointed. While White Pocket has surged in popularity (as have many things in the desert southwest), it is still a place worthy of a visit. Although I would have loved to have spent the night and photographed in the -golden hour and at night, a day tour was all I could muster. It still is a magical place, even at midday. A young woman on our tour from Ho Chi Minh City even posed in a red dress for me. All in all, it was a beautiful day.
