  • Washington Colorado Basketball 2023

The Washington Huskies came into the Coors Events Center and clipped the Buffaloes, 75-72. CU had a bad combination of poor perimeter defense and cold outside shooting that eventually did them in. A turnover with a couple seconds left and a chance to tie ended their night on a sour note.

    Holy Family vs Centaurus Basketball

Centaurus played Holy Family in both girl’s and boy’s basketball last night in Broomfield, CO. Holy Family swept the slate as both the girl’s and boy’s won their respective games. The girls won 54-35, holding Centaurus to 23% shooting. Fiona Seashell led the way with 18 points. The girls remain undefeated and stay atop the 4A rankings win the win. Meanwhile, the boys won the nightcap, 52-34.

Snowy Rocky Mountain Arsenal Wildlife Refuge

The Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge in Denver is one of my favorite places to visit in winter. When it snows, it is a spectacular place. The white covers up the brown grass and makes for a an incredible winter scene. I saw a number of animals out today, particularly whitetail deer and bison. I even caught a glimpse of a bald eagle roosting in a tree far off in the distance. The only concerning aspect of the snow was driving long the wildlife loop where it had not been plowed. Fun times!

    Whiskey Bottle Photography

As the weather turns colder, I decided to play around with my lighting equipment and create a product shot of a Woodinville Whiskey bottle. Photography of glass bottles is particularly challenging due to reflections. I had to diffuse the two side lights with a larger diffuser over a strip box and a white sheet over another. The front light on the label is provided by a cone of light using a snoot. Some reflective plexiglass provided the reflection in the foreground. All in all, I think it turned out okay for my first attempt.

  • CU Utah Football 2022

Utah handily beat Colorado 63-21 to mercifully end Colorado’s season Saturday. The Buffs won only once in a 1-11 campaign that featured a coaching change mid-season. Chants of “We Want Deion!” echoed throughout Folsom Field in reference to the report that Deion Sanders had been offered the Buffs’ coaching job earlier in the week. I’m guessing Sanders didn’t see much he liked if the game was intended as a recruiting pitch for the school. Colorado started its fourth quarterback on the season, Maddox Kopp, but the results weren’t any better. The Buffs struggled to gain a first down in the first half before finally putting two meaningless touchdowns on the board at the end of the game to make the final score look less lopsided. Let’s hope whoever the next coach is can recruit better players who won’t enter the transfer portal the first chance they get.

    CU Oregon Football 2022

Colorado went up against eighth ranked Oregon in football at Folsom Field Saturday and found out why they haven’t lost since a week-one defeat to Georgia. Oregon pulled out the trick plays in building a quick 21-0 lead. A defensive tackle and QB Bo Nix caught touchdown passes. A linebacker ran the ball in from the 1. CU played tough, frequently moving the ball, but made too many mistakes. Two second half interceptions by former Buff Christian Gonzales sealed the victory for Oregon.

    Softball Finals 2022

I photographed the Colorado high school softball tournament for the 10th consecutive year. Congrats to Columbine who beat Douglas County in 5A and Lutheran who beat Holy Family in 4A. There were some great moments in the tournament. Horizon squandered a 8-0 lead in the top half of the 7th inning in its first round match-up with Arvada West only to win in in the 10th on a walk off homer. Lutheran’s Hailey Maestretti struck out 17 of the 26 batters she faced en route to a 3-0 shutout of Holy Family in the 4A final. Erie made it close in an upset bid over #1 seed Columbine only to go down to defeat 3-2. A close play at the plate was the difference as a runner was called out.

  • Utah Fall Color

    Utah Fall Color

Since the color in Colorado was a bit muted this year, I drove over to Utah to check out fall color there. I’m glad I did. It was much more vibrant than Colorado, and the maples were still putting on a show. I drove up through Price on 191 to 6 and then took a turn toward Strawberry Reservoir. Strawberry Ridge had some nice color. There were many fishing boats out on Strawberry Reservoir which made me wish I had brought my kayak. I then drove onto Heber City where I headed up the Cascade Springs road toward Mt. Timpanogos. The maples were beautiful along this stretch. I camped at Mill Canyon overlooking Mt. Timpanogos. The sunrise on the peak was the highlight of the trip. I hiked a couple of miles up Mt. Timpanogos and stopped to admire Timpanogos Falls. The view overlooking the valley from here was awesome. I wish I had more time to hike further up the mountain. On the way back to town, I tried to drive the dirt road leading through parts of Wasatch Mountain State Park but the road was too rough to keep continuing on. I finished my trip by going through the portion of Wasatch Mountain Park that is north of Midway and headed up to Park City. The aspens there were fabulous. The trail at the summit went through some extraordinarily tall aspen. All in all, this was a very good trip.

  • Maroon Bells Fall Foliage

    Maroon Bells Fall Foliage

I reserved a parking space at the Maroon Bells to park at Maroon Lake. Unfortunately, two circumstances made photography challenging. One, the fall is a week late this year due to excess moisture during the summer. Only about 25% of the aspen had turned. Two, Maroon Lake is way low. I don’t know if it is beavers of releasing the water due to water compacts but the classic reflection shot of Maroon Lake is now impossible. Only about half the lake remains and the forest service has roped off the path and required to stay on it so access is about 50 feet from the water. The area is still beautiful but the iconic shot I fear is a thing of the past here. Luckily, the parking reservation system has limited crowds. I look forward to mid week when I can get back up in the high country to photograph the aspen.
