  • Colorado Washington State Mens Basketball 2022

    Colorado men’s basketball team played a tight game with Washington State for much of the night before using an 11-0 run deep in the second half to pull out a win. Jabari Walker was unstoppable down low and Evan Battey nailed a couple of threes to lead the Buffs. The Buffs won 83-78 despite a technical foul being called late for an illegal substitution.

  • Rocky Mountain Arsenal January 2022

    The Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge is a fantastic place to see wildlife and the fact it is close to the city limits of Denver makes it even more astounding. I saw bison, several red-tailed hawks, white tail and mule deer, and a couple of kestrels during my time there this morning. Some fresh snow made for some cool scenery as well.

    My son and I visited New Mexico for our holiday trip to end 2021. We focused on Carlsbad Caverns since my son had never been there. We also made stops at Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge near Roswell, Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge near Socorro, and White Sand National Park. The Weather was hit and miss. The wind was terrible most of the time as well. I was still able to get some cool images at White Sands and of course Carlsbad is not weather dependent since it is inside a cave. What a cool spot. I hadn’t been there in 20 years.

    Sprague Lake in winter

    I ventured up to Sprague Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park yesterday to check out the sunrise. While the sun take a while to hit the peaks directly in back of the lake the color in the sky during a winter sunrise is spectacular. I was one of only two people at the lake so it was a peaceful, serene setting to take in a pretty sunrise as well. Since it is located off the Bear Lake road, Sprague Lake can be overrun with tourists in the summer so it was a welcome change to see so few people there.

    Broomfield Centaurus Boy’s Basketball 2021

    It is not often a boy’s basketball game comes down to the last shot to decide victory. But on Thursday night, Centaurus dug down deep and came away with a 45-44 victory in the CHSAA 4A contest. Centaurus’s Levi Rubin sank a three-pointer with :01 left on the clock to give the Warriors the win. It was the last of 3 three-pointers in the final 1:30 to erase an 8-point deficit to secure the win. The Centaurus students in attendance mobbed Rubin after the clock expired.

    Broomfield controlled much of the action after halftime to pull out to a 44-36 lead. But senior center Kevin Bedford was the difference defensively for the Warriors. He blocked several shots down the stretch, paving the way for Centaurus comeback. the Warriors are now 9-0 on the year.

  • Colorado Eastern Washington Men’s Basketball

    Colorado came close to losing to an inferior opponent at home last night. Eastern Washington came into town with a 4-4 record. But a big three-point play down the stretch proved to the the difference and CU fans exhaled as the Eagles missed a shot at the buzzer that would have tied it. CU hung on to win 60-57 to improve to 7-3 on the year. The game showcased Colorado’s inconsistency. They fell fell behind 6-0 only to score the next 14 points. They took a big lead into half only to watch the Eagles whittle it back down to a point at 47-46 mid-way through the second half. Cold shooting and poor perimeter defense at the three point line once again plagued the Buffaloes. But in the end they asserted their size down low and pulled out a much needed victory.

    Erie Montrose 4A Football Semifinal

    Erie defeated Montrose 29-28 to advance to the Colorado 4A state football final Saturday. Montrose edged out to a 28-14 lead in the fourth quarter only to see Erie rally with 5:30 remaining. After scoring a touchdown, Erie recovered an on-side kick. It marched down the field and got the tying score. It then ran in a two-point conversion to take a one point lead. Montrose wasn’t done yet, however. After converting a long pass and marching down to the Erie 30, Montrose would fumble, sealing the victory for Erie.

    Ghost Ranch is an area of red rock formations in northern New Mexico made famous by Georgia O’Keefe. I had been wanting to visit the area since I got a glimpse of it about five years ago in a short visit. This time around, I hiked the Kitchen Mesa trail which features some tough hiking including a 15 foot scramble up a boulder fall. The reward at the end of the 2.5 mile trail is worth it as you get panoramic views of the area and get out on the alkaline flats on Kitchen Mesa. This is an area of finely crushed rock and sand that looks as smooth as a kitchen counter, hence the name.

    I love all the many photo opportunities at Ghost Ranch. There are old wagons, gnarled dead trees, and beautiful red rock formations to photograph. I walked the trail opposite the ropes course to catch a glimpse of the sunset. What a gorgeous view! The weather was clear with a sunny day in the high 50s. Perfect hiking weather.

    The Kitchen Mesa trail follows the main road past the buildings and Arts Center to the trailhead. It is about a quarter mile hike form the visitor center to the trailhead. The trailhead then climbs past an old Celophysis Quarry where several skeletons were excavated in the 1980s. It comes to a small ridge with a good view and then levels out until it hits the main climb up the rock face in about another 1/2 mile. The trail then ascends steeply up the side of the rock with several sections of loose dirt and rock to cross. Then comes the fun. After ascending about 3/4 of the rock face, you have to shimmy up a very narrow section through a rock fall. Leave the large pack behind and squeeze through. It is fun (scary) coming back down. The trail then tracks about another 1/2 mile along the high ridge before reaching the top. The trail continues along to the top of Kitchen Mesa.

    Colorado defeated the Washington Huskies at Folsom Field in Boulder 20-17.

  • High School Boy’s Soccer Final 2021

    Congratulations to Crested Butte and Grandview respectively for winning the 2A and 5A CHSAA boy’s soccer finals. Crested Butte defeated Lotus School for Excellence 3-1 and Grandview defeated Fossil Ridge by the same score.
