It is not often a boy’s basketball game comes down to the last shot to decide victory. But on Thursday night, Centaurus dug down deep and came away with a 45-44 victory in the CHSAA 4A contest. Centaurus’s Levi Rubin sank a three-pointer with :01 left on the clock to give the Warriors the win. It was the last of 3 three-pointers in the final 1:30 to erase an 8-point deficit to secure the win. The Centaurus students in attendance mobbed Rubin after the clock expired.
Broomfield controlled much of the action after halftime to pull out to a 44-36 lead. But senior center Kevin Bedford was the difference defensively for the Warriors. He blocked several shots down the stretch, paving the way for Centaurus comeback. the Warriors are now 9-0 on the year.
Every game top basketball recruit Baye Fall plays is worth the watch. Tuesday night against Prospect Ridge Academy, the Lutheran sophomore put on a show. The 6′-10″ Fall dominated the interior and had 9 dunks in helping his team rout the Miners in Broomfield.

It was great to see high school basketball being played again in Colorado. I covered the game between Broomfield and Boulder Friday night. I was treated to a great game as Boulder eked out a victory, 51-50, on a free throw to break the tie with 8 seconds left. I’m sure the players don’t find it easy to play in masks and without fans, but the game was still enjoyable nonetheless. I can’t wait to cover more basketball games this winter.
The Colorado 3A high school basketball tournament got as far as the Great 8 Thursday before being canceled due to COVID-19 virus. It’s a shame no team will be crowned champion, but the student athletes deserve props for competing until the very end. It was a little surreal with just parents and family in attendance but the families did their best to make it exciting and “normal” as could be. I look forward to being back next year to cover the tournament in full.
Green Mountain took on Dakota Ridge in high school boy’s basketball at the Pepsi Center Thursday. The Rams were looking to avenge a 61-60 loss earlier this season. Things did not look good for Green Mountain early as it started slowly and fell behind 18-4, thanks to some sharp shooting from behind the arc by Dakota Ridge. Green Mountain whittled away at the lead and took the lead for good late in the second half.
Eight 5A girls basketball teams squared off in the Great 8 yesterday to see who would advance to the final weekend. Highlands Ranch, Regis, Cherry Creek, and Grandview all advanced.
I photographed a boy’s basketball game between Dakota Ridge and Legacy tonight. Dakota Ridge came out hot and then Legacy chipped away in the second half to pull within one but a late surge of threes propelled Dakota Ridge to the win in Broomfield.
I photographed the boy’s basketball game this week between Broomfield and Legend. Broomfield got down by 14 early but stormed back to get within 2 in the second half. Legend took advantage of some late turnovers to secure the win in the final minutes. I always enjoy photographing Steve Croell for Broomfield who seems to hang in the air after some tough drives to the basket.
I had the chance to photograph the boy’s basketball game between Green Mountain and Bear Creek at the Pepsi Center earlier this week. The Nuggets sponsor an annual series of games that give high school teams a chance to play at the Pepsi Center. It was a lot of fun to cover. Bear Creek won this matchup and shut down Green Mountain from the start. It is always fun to shoot a game under the good lighting of the Pepsi Center in comparison to most high school gyms.
#18 Seed Fruita Monument traveled to Broomfield Saturday to take on the #15 seeded Eagles in the 5A Boy’s Basketball Playoff. Fruita won in overtime 83-76. Broomfield was down 6 with just over a minute to play but Steve Croell’s three pointer drew them even with about 15 seconds left on the clock. Broomfield had a chance to win in regulation but missed two free throws that would’ve sealed the game. Fruita prevailed in overtime as Broomfield again missed two free throws with 10 seconds left and Fruita hit a three pointer to win it with two seconds remaining on the clock. It was a hard-fought thrilling win for Fruita.
