  • Colorado USC Football 2019

Colorado gave USC everything they wanted Friday night at Folsom Field but it wasn’t enough as USC used a late touchdown to rally 35-31. CU had several explosive plays on the night including a long touchdown catch by Laviska Shenault. The Buffaloes led most of the night in a seesaw battle, but USC scored with under two minutes left to take the lead back for good. Penalties and mistakes by CU did them in once again. They had a chance to seal the game on USC’s critical last drive but couldn’t come up with an interception on a deflected pass nor recover a fumble.

  • 4A CHSAA Softball Finals 2019

The Erie High School softball team got hot at the right time. Ranked as only a #14 seed entering the Colorado State High School softball tournament, Erie faced long odds to capture its 12th title. But after defeating defending champion Holy Family (#2 seed) and Golden (#1 seed), Erie earned every bit of its record 12th title. Using the long ball 4 times, Erie prevailed 13-9 in eight innings.

  • Colorado Nebraska Football 2019

Nebraska and 30,000 of its faithful traveled to Boulder to take on Colorado in NCAA football yesterday. 30,125 people went home unhappy. In what will become a game of legend, CU stormed back in the second half to win in OT, 34-31.

Trailing 17-0 at halftime after a lackluster performance, Colorado made the necessary adjustments and shut down the Cornhuskers offense for much of the second half. The turning point came on a 96-yard flea flicker. The trick play fooled the Nebraska defense and QB Stephen Montez threw a perfect strike to pull the Buffs within 3, 17-14. He also hit Tony Brown for a 26 yard touchdown with :46 left to tie the score at 31. On the day, Montez threw for 375 yards.

That set the stage for the improbable finish. The Buffs got the ball first in overtime and settled for a field goal. Nebraska then got the ball but QB Aaron Martinez was sacked on third down, setting up a game-tying 49 yard field goal attempt. The kick never had a chance and missed badly to the right, sending the CU faithful rushing onto the field to celebrate.

  • 2019 CHSAA 4A/5A Girl’s Soccer Final

Grandview defeated Arapahoe high school last night, 2-1 to take home the CHSAA 5A girl’s soccer championship for the 4th time in 5 years while Cheyenne Mountain used a late goal to defeat Evergreen by the same score in the 4A final.

  • 2019 High School Girls’ Soccer Playoffs

The second round of playoffs is not usually a time for major upsets but 2 happened this week in the Colorado High School Girl’s Soccer playoffs. First, #1 seed Broomfield lost to #16 seed Rock Canyon, 1-0. Rock Canyon came out the aggressor and never let up to put away the game. On Saturday, #21 seed Vail Mountain School shocked #5 seed Stargate School with 3 goals in the last 5 minutes of regulation to pull out the 4-3 victory in dramatic come-from-behind fashion. I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many goals in such little time. Can’t wait for the finals in the 22nd.

  • 2019 5A Colorado Girls Basketball Great 8

Eight 5A girls basketball teams squared off in the Great 8 yesterday to see who would advance to the final weekend. Highlands Ranch, Regis, Cherry Creek, and Grandview all advanced.

  • Dakota Ridge Legacy Boy’s Basketball

I photographed a boy’s basketball game between Dakota Ridge and Legacy tonight. Dakota Ridge came out hot and then Legacy chipped away in the second half to pull within one but a late surge of threes propelled Dakota Ridge to the win in Broomfield.

  • Broomfield Legend Boy’s Basketball 2018

I photographed the boy’s basketball game this week between Broomfield and Legend. Broomfield got down by 14 early but stormed back to get within 2 in the second half.  Legend took advantage of some late turnovers to secure the win in the final minutes.  I always enjoy photographing Steve Croell for Broomfield who seems to hang in the air after some tough drives to the basket.

  • Bear Creek vs Green Mountain Basketball Pepsi Center

I had the chance to photograph the boy’s basketball game between Green Mountain and Bear Creek at the Pepsi Center earlier this week.  The Nuggets sponsor an annual series of games that give high school teams a chance to play at the Pepsi Center. It was a lot of fun to cover. Bear Creek won this matchup and shut down Green Mountain from the start. It is always fun to shoot a game under the good lighting of the Pepsi Center in comparison to most high school gyms.

  • Colorado Washington State Football 2018

Colorado lost its fifth straight football game Saturday, going down 31-7 to Washington State. The Cougars dominated the clock with a short passing game and rolled off 31 unanswered points after CUJ took a 7-0 lead on a Travon McMillan three-yard touchdown run. Gardner Minshew, the mustachioed QB, led Washington State with 300+ yards passing. The Cougars methodical attack eventual wore down the Buffs defense in the second half. CU plays Utah next Saturday at Folsom Field in Boulder.
