  • Fireball Run

I went up to Longmont Saturday to photograph some of the activities surrounding the Fireball Run.  The race went from Longmont, CO to Riverside, CA. It benefits missing children and each racer had a picture of a missing child on their car.  Some of the cars were quite creative.  My favorite was the Charlie’s Angels Ferrari. I’m sure the driver of that car was disappointed she couldn’t exceed the speed limit during the race.   The event supports a worthwhile cause and is a first rate production.  If you ever get the chance to take in the scene, be sure to check it out.

  • Thornton Horizon Soccer

I shot the boy’s soccer game Tuesday night between Thornton and Horizon.  I saw some great moments.  As usual, goals were at a premium and the excitement level of the kids when they scored was electric.

  • Denmark

I just got back from ten days in Denmark and Norway.  It was a fun trip and I got to see some great sights in Denmark and Copenhagen including Fredicksborg Castle in Hillerod and a walking tour of Copenhagen.  After a rainy start, the weather cooperated.  It was beautiful and warm my last day in Copenhagen.  I’ve included some photos from Denmark below. You can find pictures form my Norway trip here.

  • Glacier National Park Trip

I just got back from Glacier National Park and the Beartooth Mountains in Montana.  It was a fun trip but I cut it short due to weather.  Too foggy and cloudy to do much backpacking.  I enjoyed photographing waterfalls and seeing some glacial lakes.

  • Heron Nests

Great Blue Herons have taken up residence at Metzger Farm in Westminster.  They are nesting in the trees above the lake there.   The chicks have mostly hatched but some birds were still building nests when I was there.  I got to see a mother feeding her chicks and a few birds gathering sticks.  Unfortunately, the city has decided to restrict access almost completely from the nests.  They have erected a fence blocking access along the shore.  This makes photography quite challenging.  I am all for protecting wildlife but this seems extreme.  A fenced perimeter 30 feet from the nests seems logical, not 200 feet.  Herons and other birds have nested quite peacefully at City Park and Prospect Park in the past without any interference from humans.  Oh, well.  Bring a long lens or some binoculars and enjoy the show.

  • Set Stills for a Remarkable Life

Recently, I had the opportunity to shoot set stills for the movie A Remarkable Life.  It was filmed on location here in Denver.  I learned a lot about movies from this experience.  I found it very interesting how scenes are shot from so many different camera angles.  It could take hours to shoot a single, short scene.  I finally found a use for the silent motor drive on my Canon 5D MKIII as I had to make as little noise as possible.   I got to shoot inside the Museum of Nature and Science, a pawn shop, a church, and other interesting locales.  Check out more pictures from the movie at https://facebook.com/aremarkablelifemovie

  • Ducks

Photographed a wide variety of ducks at Hunter’s Glen Lake in Thornton.  I really like how many species there were to be found.  A lot of mergansers and ring-necked ducks you don’t ordinarily see around Denver.

  • Orchid Showcase

For people who love floral photography, winter can be a tough time.  Nothing is in bloom outside the sun belt,  so tropical indoor plants are the only choice available.  Thankfully, the Denver Botanical Gardens has a provided a place worth going in the winter.  In addition to the normal conservatory, visitors can take in the Orchid Showcase through the end of February.  Orchids are without a doubt one of the prettiest flowers to photograph.  And the Botanical Gardens has lots of them.  Located in the newest addition to the grounds, the orchids are set along a long glass-encased hallway.  Unfortunately, the backdrop for most of the plants is a concrete wall so bring a small black reflector or posterboard to use as a backdrop.   I used a 100mm macro and 90mm tilt/shift lens with an extension tube.  The TSE lens gives more flexibility as far as depth of field is concerned.  Raw is a must since many of the shots are of white petals or flowers that are reflective.  Hot spots or underexposed images are a distinct possibility.  In processing the shots, also look at converting images to black and white.  The striped or patterned orchids look particularly good this way.  The Gardens has also thankfully rescinded its tripod charge so photographers are once again welcome at the Gardens.

  • Dakotas in Winter

Fargo North Dakota would normally not be my destination in late November but family obligations called me up there for Thanksgiving.  I took the opportunity to visit a couple of places I had never been –Sioux Falls and Badlands National Park.  Sioux Falls is in downtwon Sioux Falls, SD.  A nice park surrounds the waterfall itself. Unfortunately, the sun is in your face when I visited in late afternoon.  Talk about lens flare.  I was still able to make a couple of nice exposures using a split neutral density filter.  The falls were in shadow and the sky was bright.  I will have to go back when the light is hitting the falls.

    Sioux Falls

After battling temperatures in the teens on Black Friday in Fargo, I stopped at Badlands National Park near Rapid City on the way back to town.  The Badlands are not as colorful as the red rock formations of Utah but are still interesting for hoodoos and sandstone formations.  I did not have much time to spend in the park but witnessed one of the most amazing sunsets I have ever seen.  I tried to frame some of the formations as silhouettes against the sunset.

    Badlands Silhouette

The reflected light from the clouds even lit up the tips of some of the badlands.  Badlands Alpine Glow

My son was very excited to see more desert bighorn sheep here after we saw several at Zion a couple of weeks ago.
