The chicks have hatched in many nests around town. I spent a couple of hours watching the night herons and egrets at City Park a few days ago. I was surprised at the fact that the birds are stick bring back sticks to the nest to keep building them.

The emotion of state high school baseball was on display today as teams tried to advance to tomorrow’s finals. Green Mountain hit a two-run single on a 3-2 pitch with 2 out to eek out a 7-6 win over Durango. Longmont won easily in the other semifinal.

Colorado blew out UW at the Events Center last night. It was a great basketball game to photograph.

I recently returned from a family trip to Texas. While there, we took a birding tour on the King Ranch near Kingsville. We saw a wide variety of birds on the tour including cara caras, vermillion flycatchers, stilts, and green jays. I also saw my first javelina. It was a fun tour and interesting to see the inside of a working ranch. The tour runs for about 4 hours. Despite the rain, it was an informative and enjoyable experience. A trained biologist lead the tour which really helped with identification and his knowledge of the birds and wildlife was extensive.

I love shooting senior portraits outdoors. I get to take advantage of some beautiful scenery in Colorado and wonderful light. In this portrait shoot, I chose a lake by my house. The lake features a short nature trail through a grove of cottonwoods before reaching the lake. The trees were also in full color which helped add interest to the background.

But sometimes, the light isn’t so wonderful. This session had to be shot in the early afternoon. Shooting near midday can be a real challenge. Sunlight can cast nasty shadows, or worse, put hot spots on my subject’s face. I live in Colorado, after all, so waiting for an overcast day isn’t a realistic option. So what to do? First, I try and take advantage of shade in the area. I try and place the subject with his back to the sun and find a tree or bush to help shade his face. I then use flash to fill in the shadows. If that doesn’t work, I try to use a reflector or other object to shade my subject’s face. In this shot, I had the subject’s mother hold a reflector near his head to take away the hot spots. We were shooting on a pier out over a lake so there was no shade in sight. I used a flash to fill in the shadow.

I also try and make sure I thoroughly cover a location to find what works. Then, I experiment. This shot was taken with no hot spots hitting my subject. A step to the left or right, and he looked like he had sun spots.

Colorado hung tough until the fourth quarter but lost big to Arizona, 44-20. Paul Richardson had another big day for the Buffs but it wasn’t enough.

CHSAA High School Softball Playoffs
I photographed the CHSAA state high school softball playoffs this weekend. It was an exciting tournament with lots of emotion. I could have done without the freezing cold temperatures, though. I shot both the 4A and 5A playoff games. Legacy High School won the 5A title and Wheat Ridge won the 4A title.
I spent four days in Minnesota and Wisconsin to check out the fall color. I went to Banning State Park in Minnesota and Lac Courtes Oreilles in Wisconsin. The color was spotty. Not a great year for hardwoods in the upper midwest. There were some trees that turned bright colors but not whole forests like in years past. The fallen leaves did make for some nice closeups, however.

I photographed the football game this past Saturday between Colorado State and UTEP. It was a fun game with big swings. COlorado State moved out to a 28-7 halftime lead, UTEP tied it with about 7 minutes left in the third quarter and the CSU pulled away in the fourth quarter. It was definitely an entertaining game with plenty of big plays. As a fan, you needed to like uniforms, though. It was orange out day at CSU and UTEP has lots of orange as well.

While I was in Longmont photographing the Fireball Run, I was introduced to a wonderful rose garden. Roosevelt Park in Longmont boasts one of the finest rose gardens in Colorado, if not the U.S. Located in the northwest corner of the park, the garden is part of the veteran’s memorial in the park. It is truly a wonderful place and one of the few things in Longmont untouched by the recent flood.
